چکیده

The concentrations of P, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga, Ge, As, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, and Au in the group IVB iron meteorites Cape of Good Hope, Hoba, Skookum, Santa Clara, Tawallah Valley, Tlacotepec, and Warburton Range have been measured by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The data were fitted to a model of fractional crystallization of the IVB parent body core, from which the composition of the parent melt and metal/melt distribution coefficients for each element in the system were determined, for a chosen value of D(Ni). Relative to Ni and chondritic abundances, the parent melt was enriched in refractory siderophiles, with greatest enrichment of 5 chondritic in the most refractory elements, and was strongly volatile-depleted, down to 0.00014 chondritic in Ge. Comparison to an equilibrium condensation sequence from a gas of solar composition indicates that no single temperature satisfactorily explains the volatility trend in the IVB parent melt; a small ( 1%) complement of ultrarefractory components added to metal that is volatile-depleted but otherwise has nearly chondritic abundances (for Fe, Co and Ni) best explains the volatility trend. In addition to this volatility processing, which probably occurred in a nebular setting, there was substantial oxidation of the metal in the IVB parent body, leading to loss of Fe and other moderately siderophile elements such as Cr, Ga, and W, and producing the high Ni contents that are observed in the IVB irons. By assuming that the entire IVB parent body underwent a similar chemical history as its core, the composition of the silicate that is complementary to the IVB parent melt was also estimated, 0016-7037/05 $30.00 .00 and appears to be similar to that of the angrite parent. Olivine Compositions and Cooling Rates of Pallasitic Meteorites

Electron microprobe measurements of olivine and metal in about 85 percent of the known pallasites were made. The olivines are unzoned, and coexisting crystals within most pallasites have identical compositions. This indicates a high degree of internal equilibrium. Relative to terrestrial olivines, pallasitic olivines are depleted in Ni. Thermochemical calculations demonstrate that the low Ni co...

Isotopic Constraints on the Origin of Iie Iron Meteorites

Introduction: Group IIE iron meteorites, together with groups IAB and IIICD, are classified as non-magmatic iron meteorites [1]. These are distinguished from magmatic iron meteorites in having element-Ni trends that cannot be explained by fractional crystalli-zation [2,3]. They also contain abundant silicate inclusions , which are largely absent in members of the magmatic groups. The non-magmat...

Pallasitic meteorites: implications regarding the deep structure of asteroids.

Olivine compositions in pallasites exhibit a bimodal distribution and indicate a high degree of internal equilibrium. Cooling rates measured in the metal phases are uniform and consistently lower than those of most iron meteorites. These factors suggest that the pallasites were derived from few parent bodies, and that they crystallized in a highly insulated site-presumably the core of their par...

Nucleosynthetic Anomalies in Palladium from Iab, Iva, and Ivb Iron Meteorites

Introduction: Nucleosynthetic anomalies have been reported in Mo and Ru from bulk chondrites, achondrites and irons [1,2], but are either more limited in W [3,4,5] or absent in Os [5,6]. The origin of these anomalies may represent spatial and/or temporal hetero-geneity in the sources that supplied material to the nas-cent solar nebula, and/or may have been enhanced by chemical processing within...

MEASUREMENT OF PGEs , Re , Mo , W AND Au IN METEORITIC Fe - Ni METAL

Introduction: The concentrations of Ni, Ga, Ge, and Ir are typically used to assign an iron meteorite to one of the chemical groups [cf., 1-3]. The improvements in analytical techniques, mainly INAA, and the systematic study of a large number of iron meteorites resulted in the development of an extensive database on their chemical compositions [4] which has been used in deciphering the origins ...
